A small plane from South Carolina made an emergency landing on the New York State Thruway near Exit 23 in Albany. The incident occurred around noon on one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season.

The aircraft, a Beechcraft Travel Air twin-piston plane registered to S & S Aviation, a flight training school in Winnsboro, South Carolina, departed Fairfield County Airport at 8:35 a.m. It encountered mechanical difficulties mid-flight, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing on the highway.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as surreal, with the plane descending and touching down smoothly amidst traffic. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the pilot, passengers (if any), or drivers on the busy thruway.

Law enforcement and emergency services quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area and assist the pilot. The New York State Police praised the pilot’s composure and skill, calling the landing a “miracle” given the absence of injuries during the peak of holiday travel.

“This could have been a devastating incident,” one officer commented. “To land a plane safely on a highway, especially with so much traffic, is an extraordinary achievement.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident to determine the cause of the mechanical failure.

The New York State Thruway was temporarily closed in the southbound direction, causing delays as authorities worked to remove the plane and clear the roadway. Despite the disruption, travelers expressed relief that no one was harmed in what could have been a tragedy.
