California Boy Tests Negative for Bird Flu, Health Officials Still Warn Against Raw Milk Consumption
A California boy who was recently tested for bird flu has returned negative results, alleviating initial concerns of a possible outbreak. The child, whose identity has not been disclosed, had shown symptoms that prompted health officials to investigate the possibility of avian influenza.
While the boy’s test results have provided relief, California health authorities are continuing to issue warnings about the potential dangers of consuming raw milk. The state’s health department emphasized that raw milk, which is unpasteurized and not heat-treated to kill harmful pathogens, can carry bacteria and viruses that pose serious health risks.
“While this case was not related to bird flu, it serves as a reminder that we must remain vigilant about food safety,” said Dr. Heather Tran, a spokesperson for the California Department of Public Health. “Raw milk can be contaminated with dangerous pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, which can cause severe illness, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.”
Health officials advise consumers to always opt for pasteurized milk products to ensure safety. Despite ongoing public education campaigns, the sale of raw milk remains legal in California, leading to concerns over its continued availability in certain areas.
As investigations continue into the boy’s symptoms and other health concerns in the state, authorities are reiterating their calls for caution, particularly when it comes to unpasteurized dairy products.
