São Paulo, Brazil — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is conscious and recovering in an intensive care unit (ICU) after undergoing an emergency surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage, doctors from the Sirio-Libanes hospital in São Paulo reported on Tuesday.
The 79-year-old president, who is known for his leftist policies and leadership, suffered a fall at his home in October, leading to complications that required immediate medical attention. Following the fall, Lula was flown to São Paulo, approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Brazil’s capital, Brasília, for treatment.
Surgery and Recovery
Dr. Roberto Kalil, the lead physician attending to the president, assured the public that Lula is currently in stable condition. “He is talking normally, eating, and conscious,” Kalil said during a press conference. “We expect no long-term effects from the surgery, and he will remain under observation for the next few days.”
The president’s recovery is progressing well, with doctors noting that there are no indications of further complications. Lula is expected to return to Brasília at the beginning of next week, although he will refrain from engaging in any official duties for the time being.
Canceled International Trip
The fall led to visible injuries on the back of Lula’s head, including a cut near his neck. As a result of his health condition, Lula canceled his planned trip to Russia to attend the BRICS summit, an important diplomatic event that would have brought together Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Support from Family
Lula’s wife, Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, accompanied him to São Paulo and is reportedly by his side at the hospital. At present, Lula has not received any other visitors.
While Lula’s immediate health recovery is a positive sign, the president’s temporary absence from official duties marks a brief pause in his leadership as he focuses on his health. Brazilian citizens and international observers will be closely monitoring his recovery.
