President-elect Donald Trump issued two statements on his Truth Social platform following the death of former President Jimmy Carter at age 100 on December 29, 2024.

In his initial post, Trump acknowledged the unique camaraderie among U.S. Presidents, saying, “Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History.” He went on to commend Carter for his efforts during his presidency, stating, “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.” Trump extended his and Melania’s condolences to the Carter family, urging others to keep them in their prayers.

In a subsequent post, Trump elaborated on his reflections, noting, “While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for.” He gave Carter his “highest respect,” describing him as “a truly good man” and highlighting his significant post-presidential contributions, stating, “He was also very consequential, far more than most Presidents, after he left the Oval Office.”

These statements have sparked a range of reactions across social media, with some praising Trump for his respectful and thoughtful comments, while others expressed skepticism about the sincerity of his words, pointing to Trump’s past criticisms of Carter. The contrast between Trump’s previous remarks, where he had mockingly compared Carter’s presidency to others, and these tributes has fueled discussions on platforms like X, where users debated the authenticity and motive behind Trump’s sentiments.

Carter, who died in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, was remembered for his humanitarian work, which earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, and his commitment to public service which continued long after his presidency.
