Madison, WI – Tragedy struck on Monday at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, when a 15-year-old female student opened fire, killing a teacher and a teenage student. Six other students were injured, two of whom remain in critical condition.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes identified the attacker as Natalie Rupnow, who also went by the name Samantha. Rupnow, a student at the school, was found dead at the scene from what authorities believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Attack
According to authorities, the shooting began shortly after midday. A second-grade student, just seven or eight years old, was the first to report the active shooter by calling 911. Emergency services responded promptly, and the school was evacuated as police secured the scene.
“Today is a sad day not only for Madison but for our entire country,” said Chief Barnes during a press conference. “We have to do a better job in our community.”
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, police have confirmed that Rupnow’s family is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Chief Barnes also noted the existence of a reported manifesto, though its authenticity has not yet been verified.
Victims and Injuries
Among the victims were a teacher and a teenage student, who succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Six other students were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, pending notification of their families.
Questions About the Firearm
It remains unclear how Rupnow obtained the firearm used in the attack. Authorities are investigating the source and whether it was legally acquired. The incident has once again brought the issue of gun control and school safety into the national spotlight.
Community Response
Local officials and community leaders have expressed their grief and outrage over the tragedy. Vigils and prayer services are being organized to support the victims and their families.
“This is a devastating loss for our community,” said a school representative in a written statement. “We ask for privacy and prayers as we process this unthinkable tragedy.”
The Madison Police Department is urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward. Authorities are working to piece together what led to the horrific incident and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
